Medical Benefits

Administered by Independence Blue Cross

Saint Joseph’s University offers a few medical plan options, dependent on which location you are employed. Both medical plans offer comprehensive coverage for you and your family. In addition, you pay $0 for in-network preventive care such as annual checkups, cancer screenings, vaccinations, and more.

Hawk Hill / University City

Employees of Hawk Hill or University City have a choice of two medical plans through Independence Blue Cross – a high-deductible health plan (HDHP) through the Personal Choice PPO Network that includes a Health Savings Account (HSA), and the HMO-25 plan, offered through the Keystone HMO Network in PA and DE and the Amerihealth Network in NJ. A few key differences between the plans:

HDHP

  • You can use a pretax HSA to pay for current and future eligible medical expenses, with an annual contribution from the University

  • Offers both In-Network and Out-of-Network coverage

  • Lower per-paycheck contributions in exchange for an annual deductible

  • Cannot utilize a Health Care Flexible Spending Account (HCFSA) and HSA at the same time

HMO

  • Requires a primary physician and referrals to use a specialist

  • Offers In-Network coverage only

  • Low copayment for most services and no deductible

  • Eligible to enroll in a pretax Healthcare Flexible Spending Account (HCFSA) to pay for eligible medical, dental, and vision out-of-pocket expenses

About the Health Savings Account (HSA)

If you enroll in the HDHP, you will have access to an HSA. This account provides tax advantages and can be used to pay for qualified health care expenses such as your deductible, coinsurance, prescriptions, dental and vision costs. Any unused funds will roll over from year to year.

Advantages of an HSA:

  • You contribute tax-free

  • Your investments earn tax-free interest

  • You make tax-free withdrawals for eligible expenses

  • The University will contribute to your HSA! $700 for Employee Only coverage and $1,400 for Employee + Dependent coverage

Note: You must make sure you meet the IRS HSA eligibility and contribution requirements.

HSA Annual Contributions and Limits

There are IRS contribution limits every year for HSAs – inclusive of the University’s contribution.
